Abstract

1,163,452. Surgical dressings. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 19 Jan., 1967 [8 Feb., 1966], No. 2922/67. Heading A5R. A dressing for wounds comprises an absorbent substrate having secured, to a portion or portions of a surface thereof, a non-absorbent film-facing with openings through which wound exudate may pass to the absorbent substrate and having a wound-contacting surface modified so that the surface tension of the wound-contacting surface is higher than the surface tension of wound exudate, whereby wound exudate which contacts the filmfacing wets the film-facing and tends to spread laterally over the wound-contacting surface of the film-facing. The modification of the wound-contacting surface of the film-facing may be effected by chemical treatment, and especially by coating the wound-contacting surface with a layer of surface active agent. Alternatively, the sunfarx active agent, if of the type which will migrate to the surface of a film upon aging, may have been incorporated into the film-facing itself; examples of such surface active agents are the anionic surfactants used in the emulsion polymerization of vinyl monomers, for example vinyl chloride. The absorbent substrate, which may be fibrous, is optionally provided with a backing sheet on the surface thereof which not adjacent the .film-facing. The film-facing, the openings in which may be semicircular in shape, may be of metal or plastics material, for example polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. The surface active agent may be a hydrophilic surfactant or a lipophilic surfactant, and examples of each class are given; it is preferred to use a mixture of a hydrophilic surfactant and a lipophilic surfactant.
