Abstract

1,163,154. Measuring temperature photoelectrically. MULLARD Ltd. May 17, 1968 [June 29, 1967], No.30115/67. Heading G1A. [Also in Division H4] A temperature sensor comprises a crystal of terbium iron garnet (TbIG), which exhibits a temperature dependent Faraday effect, and means for measuring the rotation of the plane of polarization of light due to the device. Measuring temperature. Plane polarized 1À15Á radiation from a He-Ne laser passes twice through a TbIG crystal 1 by reflection off a layer 2 and passes through an analyzer 8 to an infrared detector 9. A polepiece 3 provides sufficient magnetic field to saturate crystal 1 in the direction H 2 . The plane of polarization of the emergent beam 7 may be measured by adjusting the analyzer 8 for minimum transmission. Alternatively the analyzer may be fixed and the polarization of beam 7 allowed to vary between 40 degrees and 50 degrees of the maximum transmission position. Compensation for light source variations may be by a reference detector receiving light from the laser and controlling the drive to keep the intensity constant. Alternatively an A. C. polarization modulation of Œ 1 degree may be imposed on beam 4 by a modulator 6. The A. C. component of the detector signal is the separated out and the laser controlled to keep it constant. Two state operation TbIG exhibits a sudden change of sign of Faraday effect at a "compensation temperature". The sign of the effect may be detected and used as error signal for a two-step automatic temperature controller. The compensation temperature may be increased by incorporating Ga or Al in place of some of the Fe in the TbIg or reduced by In or Sc.
