Abstract

1,163,152. Guiding cables during winding. WHARTON ENGS. (ELSTREE) Ltd. 23 Feb., 1968 [20 April, 1967], No. 18246/67. Heading B8B. [Also in Division H2] An apparatus for guiding a loaded wire 50 on to a pair of hauling wheels from which the wire passes on to a winch drum, comprises a boom 1 extending to one side of the winch frame 2 and having its remote end anchored through a cable and linkage 21, 20, 22 to a structure other than the winch, so that the pull on the boom will be taken by the anchor. The boom comprises a guide pulley 8 at the said remote end, and a pin 3 at the other end which mounts a guide pulley 7 and pivotally connects the boom arm 50 to a forked support arm 4. The latter carries a sleeve 5 mounted on and rotatable about a hollow spigot 6 rigidly mounted on the winch frame 2, the rotational axis of the sleeve 5 being perpendicular to that of the pin 3. The spigot 6 and sleeve 5, and the boom arm 50 are slotted along their lengths to facilitate insertion and removal of the wire 50, the pulley 8 being readily detachable for the same reason. The pair of hauling wheels are hydraulically driven and may be rotated in the same or opposite direction depending upon the winding arrangement of the wire therearound. The wire passing from the hauling wheels is guided on to the winch drum by a pulley movable across the width of the drum by a double-threaded screw device.
