Abstract

1,163,023. Micro-capsules. GUNTHER WAGNER PELIKAN-WERKE. 26 Sept., 1966 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 42858/66. Heading B8C. A process of forming micro-capsules, stated to be an alternative to coacervation or polycondensation involves dispersing the substance to be encapsulated in a liquid medium with the addition of two film-forming components, one selected from the group consisting of metal alginate, metal carrageenate, metal carboxymethylcellulose, cellulose xanthogenate, unsaturated polyester and cellulose ester, and the other being a low molecular substance selected from the group consisting of metal salts having a multi-valent cation, organic acids, mineral acids, organic peroxides and O-titanic acid ester. Examples are as follows: To encapsulate tributylphosphate, ferric chloride is dissolved in it to form a 5-10% solution which is mixed with a 0À2-2% aqueous solution of ammonium alginate. Encapsulated droplets separate out which are washed in water to remove ammonium chloride and also excess ferric chloride by diffusion through the alginate film. To encapsulate clay particles, cadmium chloride solution is adsorbed on to the latter which are then suspended in a 0À1-1% aqueous sodium algenate solution. A film forms on the particles. Glycerine is encapsulated by dissolving cobalt naphthenate in a 70% solution of an unsaturated polyester resin in styrene. The solution is heated to 80‹ C. and glycerine containing methylethylketone peroxide is dispersed in it. The glycerine droplets thus are encapsulated in a polyester resin film. The process is suitable for encapsulating dyestuff solutions, pigments and solids for pharmaceutical or chemical purposes.
