Lathes.-In a metal-working machine such as a multiple-spindle lathe, preferably of the turret type and having three spindles 11, 12, 13 arranged horizontally side by side, cross-slides 123, each mounted on two pivoted bell-crank levers 124 to obtain parallel motion, are arranged on opposite sides of the spindles, and operated by levers &c. from a cam 122 on the shaft 109. The tool turret 131 may be mounted on a horizontal transverse shaft, and has indexing and locking devices. It is carried by a cam-operated slide 134. The spindles have cam-operated disengageable chuck-operating devices 13<a>, 14. The spindle speed can be varied by change-speed gear, or by clutch-controlled gearing. The feed-devices are driven either through gearing from the spindle gear, or directly by gearing from the main shaft. The controlling cam shaft 109 is also driven either by gearing from the speed-shaft, or by low-speed gear, in either direction, directly from the main shaft. Turrets.-On the backward movement of the turret slide 134, a dog 152 pivoted on a lever 151 is raised by an adjustable inclined stop 153 and thus shifts the gear 148, continuously rotated by a gear 150 slidably coupled to the shaft 97, until it is coupled to the worm 146 actuating the Geneva stop indexing mechanism 143, 144 of the turret. At the same time, a stop bar 154 is withdrawn from one of the notches 156. By closing up one or more of the notches 156, the turret-indexing mechanism may be caused to move the turret past one or more positions. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a more detailed description of the spindle-operating and stock feeding devices, and also of the feed motions for the turret feed slide, as described below. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Spindles; speed-controlling mechanism. The spindles 11, 12, 13 are driven from a shaft 22 through gearing 17, 18, 19, 20, 21. The shaft 22 is driven by changeable gears 23, 24 from a shaft 25 carrying change-speed gears 31, 32, 33, driven by gears on the main shaft. The gear 31 drives the shaft 25 at a low speed through a freewheel clutch, unless the drive is taken up by the medium-speed gear 32 or high-speed gear 33 through friction clutches 330 operated by parts 44, 45, 46 controlled by dogs 47 on the controlling drum 48. The chuck-operating devices 13<a>, 14 on each spindle are operated through a lever 15 engaging projections 113 on a transverse slide 112 carried by a longitudinally moving slide 111 operated by a cam 110 on the shaft 109 to open and close all the chucks simultaneously. If desired, the slide 112 can be shifted to disengage the parts 113, 15 and the chucks are then operable by hand-levers 114. The stock is fed by sliding tubes having collars 16 engaged by a slide 119 actuated by a cam 117 and a weight 120 and cord 121. Feed motions.-The cam 136 operating the turret feed slide is driven through a worm wheel 137, worm 138, Fig. 3, and gearing from a shaft 49 having change-speed gearing 50, 51. The gear 50 is driven from the spindle gear 17 through change-wheels 63, a change-speed gear on the shaft 55, and further change-wheels 54, 53. The gear 51 is driven direct from the main shaft 26, through gear 90, belt 88, and gear 85. The cam shaft 109 is driven by a worm 107 and wheel 108. The worm shaft 94 has a squared end for operation by a handle, or it may be operated slowly in either direction through bevel wheels 96 driving a bevel wheel 95, and actuated through gearing from the main shaft 26, or the shaft 94 may be driven from the feed shaft 49 through bevel wheels 92, 93. The handle 103 for putting into gear one or other of the bevel wheels 92, 93, has a notch 106 which interlocks with the end of a bar 104 coupled to the lever 105 on the actuating gear for the clutch driving the shaft 49, so that both gears cannot be put into operation at the same time.
