Abstract

1,162,747. Solid cell. CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE RESEARCH FOUNDATION. 8 June, 1967 [13 June, 1966], No. 26587/67. Heading H1B. A cell comprises as positive electrode a charge transfer complex of less than 10<SP>6</SP> ohms resistivity in which the electron donor is a polycyclic aromatic compound and the electron acceptor is a halogen, as negative electrode a metal reactive with halide ions and as electrolyte the metal halide. The electron donor may be either (a) a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. perylene; (b) a polycyclic heteroaromatic compound in which the heteroatom is N or S, e.g. phenothiazine; (c) a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon derivative having an alkyl, alkoxy, amino, dialkyl amino or trialkylammonium substituent; or (d) a polymer containing residues of (a), (b) or (c). The halogen may be Br 2 or I 2 . The positive electrode may also contain carbon, e.g. graphite and a polymer matrix which may be inert or may also be the electron donor. Polymers specified include polyvinylcarbazole, poly-vinyl-quinoline, and polyvinylpyridine, a polyolefin or a polymerized vinyl monomer. The negative electrode may be Al, Ba, Ca, In, Mg , a Mg/Li alloy or Ag and the positive electrode may be deposited on it from a solution. Current from the negative electrode may be collected by a contact member of Pt, C, Ni, Ag or In and the two electrodes may be separated by a diaphragm of polypropylene. The cell may be retained by jig 18 (Fig. 1) comprising two nylon cups screwed together, enclosing the cell 10-15 and spring 16. The power of the cell may be improved by enclosing it in an atmosphere saturated with a liquid of dielectric constant 10 or more, e.g. water, acetone, acetonitrile, methanol. The cell 30 may be mounted in cup 38 fitted with cover 42 employing sealing gasket 44. The mass 46 is saturated with liquid.
