Abstract

1,162,493. Welding by pressure. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 27 Feb., 1967 [7 March, 1966], No. 9840/66. Heading B3R. The lugs of a group of dispersion strengthened lead battery plates are connected by maintaining the lugs in contact with a conductive bar and applying pressure between the lugs and the bar while at the same time passing current between them. Dispersion strengthened lead battery plates and separators are assembled, the lugs from adjacent negative and positive plates being at opposite ends, and the assembly is held in a jig 10 while the lugs are trimmed. A conductive bar having projections to engage the tops of the lugs at one end of the assembly is pressed against those lugs by one electrode 15 of a resistance welder and current is passed to effect welding. Pressure is maintained while the weld cools. The conductive bar may be of dispersion strengthened lead and may be welded to an adjacent assembly at the same time. A number of bars may be welded simultaneously and the bar to be welded to a large group of plates may be welded in sections.
