Abstract

1,162,440. Turbines - inlet nozzle guide vane assemblies. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N. V. June 4, 1968 [June 5, 1967], No.25839/67. Heading F1T. The invention relates to a gas turbine suitable for operation with contaminated gas as the working fluid, the turbine inlet casing having a centre body which carries at least one pre-rotation vane, a stationary nozzle guide vane assembly defining straight nozzle passages, and a rotor comprising a single, mainly impulse, stage. In the embodiment shown the turbine comprises an inlet casing 1 having an internal refractory lining 2, a centre body 3 being disposed within the casing 1 to define an annular gas flow passage. A series of prerotation vanes 4 are mounted on the centre body to impart rotational flow to the gas stream, the vanes 4 being followed by an inlet nozzle guide vane assembly 5 which defines a plurality of straight nozzle passages 19 of convergent-divergent form. The gases flowing through the passages 19 are directed on to the single stage impulse stage 6, the gases finally discharging through outlet 8. The rotor shaft 11 is enclosed within a sleeve 10 and is supported by a bearing housing 7 which is itself supported within the casing 8 by means of struts 9. The pre-rotation vanes 4 have a refractory layer 14 supported on an inner core portion 15 or 16. The nozzle guide vanes 17 are formed with passages 18 for coolant flow; the rotor blades 6 are similarly formed with passages 20 for coolant flow.
