Abstract
1,162,045. Furnace electrodes. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 24 April, 1967 [26 April, 1966], No. 18788/67. Heading H5H. An arc furnace electrode which is externally removable comprises a part 4 in contact with the melt which is made of the same metal as that of the melt and a part 5 of good thermal and electrical conductivity, electrically and thermally connected to the part 4 which extends to the outside of the furnace. If the melt is iron or steel, part 4 is of iron or steel and part 5 is of copper or silver. Part 5 has a plateshaped cooling surface 7 and is resiliently urged into the furnace lining 1 by three springs such as 12. Parts 4 and 5 are joined at 6 by pouring one part on to the other while still molten. In an alternative arrangement the parts 4 and 5 are formed individually, part 4 having a conical recess in which a conical projection of part 5 nestles. Vertical ribs are formed on the outside of part 5 between which copper bus-bars are accommodated. The bus-bars and part 5 may be in an air duct through which cooling air is passed. The cooling of the electrode may be increased temporarily when the melt is being poured from the furnace.
