Abstract

1,161,871. Luminescent materials. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 4 Aug., 1966 [4 May, 1965], No. 18767/65. Heading C4S. A method of precipitating an inorganic phosphor which is a salt, whose cation is an element included in Series 4 to 11 of Mendeleeff's Periodic Table comprises simultaneously running solutions containing the cation and anion of the salt respectively into a vessel containing a reaction solution and stirring rapidly, the excess of anion or cation being not more than 0À5 molar at least during the earlier part of the reaction, local excesses appreciably above the average being prevented by the stirring. Phosphors referred to include Ba, Ca and Sr sulphides, sulphates, carbonates, silicates, tungstates, molybdates, fluorides and germanates activated by Sn, Eu, Pr, Nd, Pb, U, Cu, Mn, Cr, Ti, V and Be; Na, K, Li and NH 4 activators may be included. Activated Ba and Ba-Ca sulphates are precipitated by adding a solution of BaCl 2 , PbCl 2 and HCl and a solution of Na 2 SO 4 and HCl to a reaction solution of Na 2 SO 4 and HC1. Sulphate ions may be added in the form of sulphates of metals in Groups I, II and III, e.g. Na, K, Ca, Cu, Zn, Al and In. The Ba and Pb ions may be added as soluble halides and acetates. Bi, Mn, Eu, Sn and Pr chlorides may be added to the BaCl 2 solution. The reaction may be carried out in a spherical vessel containing several baffles and having jets for the introduction of the reactants. During the reaction a 0À1 molar excess of anions or cations may be maintained in an aqueous solution having a pH less than 1 at 70<SP>‹</SP> to 100‹ C. HC1, HBr, HI, haloacetic benzene sulphonic, perchloric, phosphoric, phosphorous and hypophosphorous acids are used to control the pH value. The phosphors with a binder are used in X-ray intensifying screens.
