Abstract

1,160,415. Cooling towers. MERZ & McLELLAN SERVICES Ltd. 18 Nov., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 49246/65. Heading F4K. In a circular ferro-concrete cooling tower 10 a number of pretensionable rods 51 extend out radially from the axis of the tower where they may be joined to each other or to a central ring 16, the outer ends of rods 51 being secured to the tower wall to restrain same from distortion by wind forces. In Fig. 5 two sets of tension rods 51, 52 with each set radiating from a central ring 16, are disposed in horizontal planes one above the other and are interconnected by suspension wires 53, 54 and 55. A support wire 56 extends from the cornice 57 to the upper central ring 16, two suspension wires 59 and 60 depending from a point 58 on wire 56 for connection on to the rod 52. Simplified embodiments (Figs. 1 to 3) have only one set of tension rods. Each tension rod is supported at intermediate points along its length by wires connected directly, or indirectly via a support wire to a point on the tower wall above the plane of the tension rods. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4) the tower is provided at its upper end with a horizontal rod or beam (38) supporting downwardly extending vertical suspension wires interconnecting said rod or beam with the tension rods (15). The central ring 16 may be made large enough (Fig. 6) to allow passage therethrough of a central construction mast.
