Abstract

[Also in Divisions G1 and H1] A laminate comprises two sheets of monaxially oriented film which have their directions of orientation substantially at right angles, and which are bonded together only over a portion of their surface area, the balance of the area being unbonded to produce discontinuities in the lamination. The films, which may be of stretched ethylene-butene copolymer, may be unbonded along one set of parallel strips, or along two perpendicular sets of parallel strips, or in discrete square areas (see Fig. 1). The areas over which the films are bonded may be determined by applying a pattern of rubbery adhesive to these areas or by subjecting them to an electrical or chlorine treatment so enabling these areas to be caused to adhere at a temperature below the melting point of the film material. In one embodiment film 19 is subjected to a corona discharge over part of its area by passing it around a drum 14, the surface of which is formed by a patterned electrode 15, and which is parallel to an electrode 22 connected to a high voltage high frequency source 23. The film 19 is laminated by heated pressure rolls to a second film which has been subjected to electrical treatment over the whole of its surface.
