Abstract

1,160,186. Desulphurizing oil. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 1 May, 1968, No. 20647/68. Heading C5E. A process for the preparation of a lowsulphur oil from a high-sulphur residual oil comprises splitting up the said high-sulphur residual oil into asphaltenes and a deasphaltenized oil, splitting up the said deasphaltenized oil into resins and a deasphaltenized and deresinized oil, catalytically hydro-desulphurizing the said deasphaltenized and deresinized oil to obtain a hydro-desulphurized oil and back-blending the said hydro-desulphurized oil with resins. Asphaltenes may be precipitated from the starting material by means of ethyl ether or a mixture of benzene and ethyl alcohol; alternatively, one or more aliphatic hydrocarbons with 5 to 10 carbon atoms per molecule may be used. The resins in the deasphaltenized oil may be absorbed on fuller's earth, activated alumina or silica and recovered by elution with benzene, they may be extracted with a phenolic solvent and recovered by vacuum distillation, or they may be precipitated with one or more aliphatic hydrocarbons containing less than five carbon atoms per molecule. The hydrogenation may be performed over a cobalt molybdate catalyst.
