A gas fire radiant is formed as a hollow member 10 open at one end to receive the combustion products of a burner 16. The radiant has a front wall 14 of glass or other translucent material (which may be in sections to minimize thermal shock), and a gas permeable rear wall 11 which may be made of a porous material or (as shown) it may be perforated with apertures 17; or it may be made of wire mesh. In use, the rear wall becomes incandescent and the heat is absorbed and re-radiated by the front wall 14. The rear wall 11, which may comprise either ceramic or metallic material, may have projections thereon of known kind to increase the heat absorption from the combustion products.
