Abstract

1,159,806. Measuring liquid level electrically. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 11, 1966 [Nov. 12, 1965], No.48041/65. Heading G1N. [Also in Division H1] A liquid level gauge includes a potentiometer having a printed resistive track 18, Fig. 4, and a float operated wiper. The track 18 is on an insulating board 10, and has a rotatable wiper which moves along a line 22, a constant voltage source, energized for example from a vehicle battery, being connected via a heated bi-metallic strip type meter (2, Fig. 1, not shown) to one end 17 of the track, the wiper being earthed. The track, which may be an alloy of nickel and chromium or copper is of serpentine configuration, and the part remote from the end 17 is narrower than the rest (the change in width occurring at 21) to give a non-linear resistance variation. In an alternative track configuration Fig. 5 (not shown) the part 16 of the track between the end terminal 17 and the limit 23 of wiper movement is of greater width and length to provide heat dissipation in the event of an excessive voltage arising due to a fault in the regulation thereof. If a norrow track (18, Fig. 6, not shown) is used to achieve higher resistance per unit length widened portions (36) are provided for contact with the wiper. A float assembly for monitoring the fuel level of a vehicle Figs.2, 3 (not shown) consists of a float (11) on an arm (7) carrying the wiper (13). The board (10) carrying the track is mounted on a plate (6) in a housing (15), contact to the end 17, (Fig. 5), of the track being made via a rivet (29), a conductive strip (30), and a terminal (32) mounted in a plate (4) fixed in the tank wall and carrying the fuel outlet tube (5).
