Abstract
1,159,700. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Nov. 9, 1966 [Nov. 25, 1965], No. 50328/66. Heading F1F. Radial seal strips between the piston and stator of a rotary-piston I.C. engine of the kind comprising a 2N lobed piston of epicycloidal contour revolving eccentrically within a 2N + 1 lobed conjugate contoured stator, comprise strips 3, Fig. 2, inscribed in a circle of diameter d and oscillate in part-circular grooves 4 in the stator extending axially at locations where two adjacent lobes 1<SP>1</SP>, 1<SP>2</SP> merge. The strips include arced portions AB of radius R centered at P offset from the center O of the strip, tangential extensions A<SP>1</SP>A, BB<SP>1</SP> at either end thereof and "cut-back" portions A<SP>1</SP>C and B<SP>1</SP>DE to ensure that no interference occurs on the piston 2 moving into either of its extreme positions 2<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>2</SP>. With piston rotation in the direction of the arrow, P is offset such that the extensions of all the radii of portion AB and of the lines A<SP>1</SP>P, B<SP>1</SP>P pass to the right of center O so that the frictional force will be in a direction tending to release the engagement between the sealing strip and the piston. A plurality of springs 5 received in holes 7 in the stator tend to rotate the sealing strip about the axis O in a direction opposite to that in which the piston tends to rotate the strip. During rotation of the piston the piston is constantly tangent to the strip 3 at points lying normally between A and B.
