Abstract

1,159,552. Polymerizable paint binder compositions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 9 Aug., 1966 [13 Aug., 1965], No. 5426/69. Divided out of 1,159,551. Headings C3P and C3T. Paint binders polymerizable by means of ionizing radiation comprise a film-forming solution in a flow-inducing solvent of (a) a vinylunsaturated binder component consisting essentially of an addition product of a diisocyanate and a C 5 -C 12 monohydroxy acrylic monomer, the said addition product having a molecular weight below 900, and (b) an organic resin having a molecular weight in excess of 1000 and containing 0À5-3 olefinic unsaturation units per 1000 of molecular weight, the resin (b) and binder component (a) being copolymerizable by ionizing radiation. The film-forming solution may be pigmented, e.g. with TiO 2 . The flow-inducing solvent may be a vinyl monomer or monomers, e.g. methyl methacrylate and/or styrene. In examples the binder component is an adduct of tolylene diisocyanate and 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate and the organic resin is (i) a silicone-modified polyester obtained by reacting nepoentyl glycol with a methoxylated partial hydrolysate of monophenyl and phenylmethyl silanes consisting essentially of dimethyltriphenyltrimethoxytrisiloxane and then further reacting with maleic anhydride, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, dibutyl tin oxide and xylene; (ii) a silicone-modified polyester similar to (i) but wherein the siloxane used is a hydroxyfunctional, cyclic polysiloxane; (iii) a polyester derived from maleic anhydride, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and neopentyl glycol; (iv) a methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer modified by reaction with methacrylic acid. The treatment of the paint binder compositions with ionizing radiation is described in copending application Serial 1,159,551.
