Novel compounds of Formula (I) in which either Z signifies the radical -CH 2 CH 2 - and each X signifies a hydrogen atom or together they signify a second bond, or Z signifies the radical -CH=CH- and both X together signify a second bond, and their acid addition salts, are prepared by reacting a compound corresponding to Formula (I) above in which the hydrogen atom on the nitrogen atom of the piperidine ring is replaced by a methyl group with a chloroformic acid ester of formula Cl-COOR in which R represents an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, or an aralkyl group having 7-10 carbon atoms, and subjecting the resulting compound in which the methyl group is replaced by a -COOR radical to hydrolysis and, when an acid addition salt is required, reacting the resulting compound of Formula (I) with an acid. 4 - (1 - Methyl 4 piperidyl) - 9,10 - dihydro- 4H - benzo - [4,5] - cyclokepta - [1,2 - b] - thiophen may be prepared by heating a solution of 4-(1- methyl - 4 - piperidylidene) - or 4 - hydroxy- 4 - (1 - methyl - 4 - piperidyl) - 9,10 - dihydro- 4H - benzo - [4,5] - cyclohepta - [1,2 - b] - thiophen in glacial acetic acid at reflux temperature for 1¢ hours with red phosphorus and hydriodic acid. Therapeutic compositions having anti-serotonin and anti-cholinergic activity which may be administered enterally or parenterally contain as active ingredient a compound of Formula (I) above or an acid addition salt thereof, while such compositions containing a compound I in which Z is -CH 2 CH 2 - and the two symbols X signify a second bond also possess histaminolytic activity.
