Abstract

1,158,976. Carbon dioxide. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 10 May, 1968 [12 May, 1967], No. 22287/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] Gas mixtures are purified by successive treatments with an aqueous solution of a trialkanolainine and with an absorbing liquid containing an organic base with a Pkb at 25‹ C. of 3 to 14 and a physical absorbing agent. The process may be applied to the purification of H 2 , CO 2 mixtures produced by the reaction of water and CO. Pressures of 20 to 80 atmospheres are preferred, preferably the same in both stages, and temperatures in the first stage range from 20‹ to 80‹ C. The organic base is preferably an alkanolamine (AA), especially a diAA, but alkyl-, phenylalkyl-, alkoxyalkyl-, and alkoxyarylamines may be used. The physical absorbing agent may be sulpholane and its derivatives, aliphatic acid amides, perhalohydrocarbons, N-alkylated pyrrolidones and piperidones, dialkylsulphoxides, oxazolidones, and trialkyl esters of phosphoric acid. Glycol and/or water may be present in the second stage.
