Abstract

1,158,850. Press brakes. PACIFIC PRESS & SHEAR CORP. 16 Nov., 1967 [16 May, 1967], No. 52243/67. Heading B3E. [Also in Division B5] In an hydraulic press brake &c. comprising at least one hydraulic motor 3 or 5 including a cylinder 7 and piston 9 coupled to a ram 1, the upper and lower ends of the cylinder 7 being connected through flow-reversing means to pump means P for producing work and return strokes of the ram 1, means are provided for throttling discharge flow from the cylinder 7 during a return stroke whenever return movement of the piston 9 exceeds that producible by normal pump feed of liquid to the cylinder 7. As shown, two motors 3 have their pistons 9 connected to opposite ends of the ram 1 and two pumps P are provided. Each pump is connected to the upper side of one cylinder 7 and the lower side of the other cylinder. The means for throttling discharge flow from the cylinder 7 during a return stroke includes a valve assembly 51 shown in section in Fig. 3 and including an input 57 for connection to pump line 20 and a discharge 59 connected to a tank 15. A spring 65 normally biases a main valve 63 against its seat 61. A small opening 73 allows access for hydraulic fluid to a chamber 71 above the valve 63. An auxiliary passage 77 connects the input 57 to a chamber at the lower end of the valve 63. The pressure in the lower end of each cylinder 7 can be transmitted through a line 111 to the valve assembly 51 to act on a valve spool 103 which is biased to the left by a spring 105. If the pressure at 111 is sufficient to overcome the spring 105 a passage 97 in a valve sleeve 91 is opened and pressure in chamber 71 is relieved through a by-pass passageway 81 controlled by a solenoid-operated valve 79. Relief of pressure at 71 allows the excess pressure at 77 to overcome spring 67 and open valve 63 so that fluid can be discharged from the upper side of cylinder 7. If the return movement of one of the pistons 9 is too great, pressure at 111 will be insufficient to overcome the spring 105 and valve 103 will be moved to block passage 97.
