Abstract

1,158,819. Sanding. CARBORUNDUM CO. 18 April, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 18312/68. Heading B3D. Apparatus for urging an abrasive belt against a workpiece comprises a contact roll engageable with said abrasive belt and having an axis of rotation, and means mounting said contact roll for free rotation about an axis normal to a vertical plane including the axis of rotation of said contact roll. An automatic stroke sanding machine comprises an endless abrasive belt 24 trained round pulleys 20, 22 journalled on a frame 12 supported by pedestals 14, 16 on a base 18. Either of the pulleys may be driven. A work-table 32 has rollers 30 running on guide rails 26, 28 secured to the pedestals; the work-table is reciprocated manually or by automatically controlled means. An endless conveyer belt may be used in lieu of the worktable. Alternatively, the work-table may be stationary and the frame 12 have rollers running on guide rails mounted on the pedestals or on a ground surface. A slide 42, slotted at 120 to reciprocate on a guide bar 122 has a cable rope 44 secured to its ends, the rope being trained round pulleys 114, 116 secured on the frame 12 and wrapped about a winding drum 118 rotated alternatively in opposite directions by an hydraulic motor. A bracket 50 secured to the slide 42 has a dovetail slot 52 in which is slidably mounted a member 54 secured in adjusted position by set screws 56. A flat plate 58 is secured to the member 54 and has secured thereto blocks 62 housing bearings 64 which permit free rotation of a shaft 66. The blocks have grease fittings 76. A flat plate 78 is secured to a flat portion 77 on the upper side of the forward end of the shaft 66. The bight portion (84) of a yoke member is secured to the plate 78; the arms 86 have slots 94 receiving the end portions of a shaft 106 on which a contact roll 82 is journalled by bearings (110). Rotational movement of the yoke about the axis of shaft 66 is limited by adjustable stop screws (91), 93 on lugs (95), 97.
