Abstract

1,158,765. Ice-making. P. B-S. VIVAI. 12 May, 1967 [20 May, 1966], No. 22137/67. Heading F4H. Ice-making apparatus comprises a set of depending members 17 having refrigerant passages therein, a water-filled tray 23 which is cyclically moved towards and away from members 17 so that the latter are periodically immersed and ice-blocks C form therearound by accumulation. The tray is supported by pairs of links 25A, 25B the former of which is connected to a shaft 27 which is suitably rotated by an electric motor (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown). A feeler arm 37 normally follows the movement of link 25A but is prevented from downward movement when a flexible projection at its end engages an ice-block of predetermined size. Relative movement of the shaft and feeler arm then operates a switch which initiates a harvesting cycle in which members 17 are heated by heating tubes or electrical resistances 21 or by circulating water or hot gaseous refrigerant through the passages within members 17. The detached blocks fall into a storage space B striking a pivoted plate 7 as they do so. The plate is returned to the horizontal by a spring unless space B is full in which case it operates a switch terminating operation of the apparatus. Tray 23 has an overflow arrangement incorporating a weir for maintaining a constant water level therein. An electric control circuit is described (Fig. 9, not shown). It is stated that ice blocks formed in the manner described above are transparent.
