Abstract
1,157,695. Fibrillating foamed materials. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 3 Oct., 1967 [17 Nov., 1966], No. 51479/66. Headings D1F, D1R and D1W. A fibrous material for example a non- woven fabric, or a yarn as described in specispecifications 1,114,151 and 1,131,282 respectively, or discrete fibres - is produced by drawing an extruded foamed thermoplastic material to orientate it essentially in one direction, and breaking the walls of, the foam down by the action of a turbulent stream of fluid to form the fibrous material. The composition, production, and drawing of the foamed material is as described in the above mentioned specifications. The fluid may be air, nitrogen, argon, or helium and may contain carborundum particles, or a liquid, which may be a non-solvent for, or cause a partial swelling of, the foamed material, may be used, for example water, acetone, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, benzene, toluene or xylene. The fibrous material may pass through a tube having solid or porous walls - for example of wire gauze. There may be several jets of fluid arranged around the tube or there may be an annular jet. The fluid may be directed in a direction inclined to or opposed to the direction of movement of the material. The fluid treatment may be preceded by a rubbing, rolling, twisting, shaking, or beating treatment, for example by being passed through a nip between a series of reciprocating rollers or between reciprocating bars.
