Novel benzazole derivatives of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or chlorine; R<SP>2</SP> is hydrogen or C 1 _ 2 alkoxy; R<SP>3</SP> is di-(C 1 _ 4 alkyl)- amino, an N-containing saturated heterocyclic group, anilino, benzylamino or substituted benzylamino; R<SP>4</SP> is hydrogen or methyl; X is O, S or NH; Y is a direct bond or alkylene having 1 or 2 carbon atoms; and n is 1 or 2; and acid addition salts and quaternary ammonium derivatives thereof are prepared by reaction of a benzazole derivative of the general formula in the presence of an alkali with a compound of the general formula wherein Hal is a halogen, followed optionally by conversion of the resulting product into an acid addition salt or quaternary ammonium derivative thereof. 2-(2<SP>1</SP>-Hydroxyphenyl)-benzimidazole is prepared by reaction of o-phenylenediamine with salicylamide. Pharmaceutical compositions having antianginose, coronary vasodilatory and peripheral circulation enhancing effects comprise, as active ingredient, a benzazole derivative of the first general formula above or an acid addition salt or quaternary ammonium derivative thereof, together with a pharmaceutical carrier.
