Abstract

115,746. Lindsay, W. H. July 28, 1917. Machine details; springs.-Taper coils, used in place of cone clutch-parts, are made by cutting a deep spiral groove in a holow tapered casting and boring or cutting away the inside of the casting up to the root of the groove. A clutch cone c is cast with a spiral groove k and with strengthening- webs l at intervals at the bottom of the groove. The cone is then bored out to cut away the metal at the base of the grooves, and cuts l<2> are made through the webs l, so as to convert the cone to a helical coil.
