Abstract

1,157,376. Monoethanolamine impregnated carbon; absorbing gases. PITTSBURGH ACTIVATED CARBON CO. 17 Nov., 1967 [18 Nov., 1966], No. 52337/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions A2 and C5] Acid gases are removed from mixtures with non-acidic gases by passing the gas mixture through granular activated charcoal impregnated with at least 10.5% by weight of monoethanolamine (M.E.A.). The acid gas may be, for example, C0 2 , NO 2 , SO 2 , H 2 5, HCN, SO 3 , COS, CS 2 , or COCl 2 whilst the non-acid gas may be flue gas, natural gas, coke oven gas, air, nitrogen, hydrogen or hydrocarbon gases. Examples relate to removal of C0 2 from ethylene. The M.E.A. impregnated carbon may also be used to remove acidic gases from tobacco smoke. The carbon, which may be from 4 to 325 US mesh is impregnated with the M.E.A. by soaking or spraying with or without water, or preferably, by exposing the carbon to M.E.A. vapour (see Specification 1,157,377.
