Abstract

1,156,783. Polyurethane foams. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 July, 1966 [30 July, 1965], No. 32709/65. Headings C3C and C3R. Polyurethane foams having an irregular pore structure resembling natural sponge are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with an hydroxyl group containing polyester and water in the presence of 0À001% to 0À03% weight of the polyester of a dimethylpolysiloxane fluid having a viscosity of at least 5,000 centistokes at 25‹ C. and a finely divided solid having a particle size not exceeding 30 microns in an amount less than that of the dimethylpolysiloxane. Aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic diisocyanates may be used as may triisocyanates, reaction products of an excess of a diisocyanate with a polyhydric alcohol, uretidione dimers and isocyanurate polymers of diisocyanates and the polyisocyanate compositions obtained by the phosgenation of the mixed polyamine reaction products of formaldehyde and aromatic amines. Conventional polyesters prepared by reacting dicarboxylic acids with polyhydric alcohols if desired in the presence of diamines or aminoalcohols may be used. The finely divided solid may be silica, chalk, talc, asbestine, diatomaceous earths, clays, carbon black, zinc oxide, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate/butyrate. benzyl cellulose, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose and methyl hydroxypropyl cellulose. Silica aerogets are preferred. The dimethylpolysiloxane is suitably coated upon the finely divided solid. Additional blowing agents such as inert low-boiling-point liquids, catalysts such as tertiary amines and organic compound of tin, iron, manganese and lead, surface active agents such as oxyethylated alkyl phenols and sulphated long chain compounds and flame retardants such as tris-2-chloroethylphosphate and tris-2,3- dibromopropyl phosphate may also be added to the reaction mixture.
