Abstract
1,156,281. Boots &c. J. S. KAMBORIAN. 1 Jan., 1968 [18 Jan., 1967], No. 123/68. Heading A3B. Apparatus for shaping a sole and thereafter pressing it against the bottom of a shoe form includes a support 16 for the shoe form, a moulding member 138 mounted above the shoe form and which can be retracted to a remote position, a pressing pad 140 which presses the sole against the moulding member 138 or the shoe form, and sole retaining means which hold the sole in position when the moulding member 138 is retracted and then allows the sole to fall on to the bottom of the shoe form. The apparatus may be used for mounting an insole on a bare last or for mounting an outsole on a lasted upper. The last support 16 (Figs. 1, 9) consists of a toe rest 20 and a last pin 30. The last pin 30 is mounted on a slide which is movable towards and away from the toe rest 20 and the pin 30 can be retracted by an air motor 26. The last can be locked on the last pin 30 by a block 38 which is urged towards the last pin 30 by a wedge driven by an air motor 46. The mould 138 (Figs. 8, 9) is carried by a slide 148 which is movable along a track 146 by an air motor 152 between an operative position over the last and a rearward remote position. The mould 138 is pivoted to the slide 148 by a pin 16 and can be aligned with a left or right last by an air motor 170 which is connected to the mould 138 by brackets 174, slide 162 and pivot 166. The mould 138 has a shape corresponding to that of the last bottom but exaggerating the curvatures of the last so that the continuity of the fibres of the insole will become disrupted to a degree sufficient to reduce the elasticity of the insole. The mould 138 is also provided with adhesive applying outlets 214, 216 which deposit two dots of adhesive on to the insole. The apparatus is provided with a toe locating assembly 100 (Figs. 1, 10) which is mounted on a slide 64 which can be adjusted by a lever 84. The toe locators 100 consist of bars 102, 104 which are pivoted to bell cranks 108 which can be pivoted towards the last by air motors 114 so that the bars 102, 104 contact the last. Extensions 176 are used to position the toe of the insole when it is placed on the mould 138. A dot of adhesive can be applied to the bottom of the last by an adhesive applicator 250 movable into contact with the last by an air motor 242. A toe presser 302 mounted by a spring 320 on a linkage 300, 304, 292, 298 is movable by an air motor 310 so that it presses the toe of the insole against the last and then drags it toewardly until the insole contacts the toe locators 102, 104. The pressing pad 140 (Figs. 24, 25) consists of a rubber pad having a contour complementary to the last bottom and is carried by a pair of rams 184. The rams 184 are lowered by a pair of levers 190 which are operated by an air motor 200 and which have a fulcrum 204. The fulcrum 204 is movable along a slot 206 by an air motor 208 so that the mechanical advantage of the levers 190 can be varied thus allowing high pressure to be applied when the pad 140 contacts the mould 138 (Fig. 24) and low pressure when the pad 140 contacts the last bottom (Fig. 25). The pad 140 is pivoted by a pin 334 to the rams 184 so that the pad 140 can be tilted to align it with the last bottom (Fig. 25). The pad 140 is automatically tilted when the rams 184 are lowered by a lever 350 which is controlled by a crank 340 having a roller 342 running in a cam track 362. The machine operates automatically and the various motors are controlled by valves operated by a set of cams (not shown) which are moved past the valves by an air motor. The machine operates as follows:- the operator places a last on the last pin 30 and slides the last forwardly until it contacts an actuator on the toe locating assembly 100 which causes the last to be locked in position and the toe locators 102, 104 to swing into contact with the toe of the last. The operator then places an insole on the mould 138 using the extensions 176 and a heel guide 178 to position the insole and then restarts the machine. The fulcrum 204 then moves to its forward position (Fig. 24) and the adhesive applicator 250 is moved into contact with the last. The motor 200 is then operated to lower the rams 184 to mould the insole. During the moulding of the insole adhesive is supplied to the applicator 250 and to the outlets 214, 216 in the mould 138. The rams 184 are then raised, the fulcrum 204 is moved to its heelward position (Fig. 25) and the adhesive applicator 250 is moved to its remote position. The mould 138 is then retracted allowing the insole to drop on to the last bottom. Heel guides 274 (Fig. 9) pivoted at 278 are then swung towards the last by an air motor 284 and the toe presser 302 contacts the insole to position the toe end of the insole on the last. The rams 184 are then operated using a lighter pressure than during moulding to press the insole against the last bottom. During the reshaping of the insole the toe of the insole is positioned by the toe locators 102, 104 and the insole tends to spread heelwardly, the heel end being guided by the heel guides 274. The rams 184 are then raised, the toe and heel locators 102, 104, 274 are retracted, the toe presser 302 is retracted and the last is unlocked from the last pin 30. The last pin 30 is then retracted from the last which is then ejected by a plunger 31 (Fig. 1) operated by an air motor (not shown).
