(Also in Division H2] A liquid stirrer comprises a non-magnetic liquid container 11 e.g. glass beaker having, in the embodiment shown, loosely disposed therein a paddle comprising a permanent magnet 12 covered with an inert material 13 such as glass, polyethylene or PTFE and rotated about an axis 10 by a rotating magnetic field crated by four coils 1 . . . 4 connected with a phase shift, to variable frequency a.c. supply. In other embodiments the paiddle may be a disc with integral fins; it may be disposed against a side wall of the container, being held mechanically or by magnetic force; or replaced by a turntable coupled with the magnet and having the container placed thereon.
