A method of grinding a disc surface of a brake disc comprises contacting the surface of the disc with an abrasive disc mounted on a floating universal unit which enables contact with the surface of the disc without need of critical alignment of the unit. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the brake disc 11, Fig. 1, together with its hub 13 is mounted on the spindle of a lathe and the surfaces of the disc are ground by a brake disc grinder 10 adapted to be mounted on the lathe in place of the cutter bar for turning the disc. The grinder 10 consists of a tubular support 28 which at one end carries a motor 26 connected by a shaft 50, Fig. 2, and spiral gearing to a shaft 85 rotatably mounted in a housing 38 at the other end of the support. The shaft 85 supports, through a universal mounting consisting of a spherical ball 80<SP>1</SP> and pins or screws 82<SP>1</SP> engaging slots 77 in a hole, a plastic, rubber or synthetic rubber disc 24 to which is secured by a screw 76 an abrasive disc 24<SP>1</SP>, a spring 84 urging the disc 24 outwardly from the shaft. The support 28 is adjustably secured between the parts 29, 30, Fig. 1, of a clamp on a bar 31, and both the housing 38 and the motor 26 are adjustable relative to the support to permit positioning of the abrasive disc for grinding one side or the other of the disc. The bar 31 is secured by a clamp 35 to the cross slide of the lathe for longitudinal and tranverse adjustment with respect to the spindle of the lathe. The hub 13 of the brake disc is secured between conical members on the spindle of the lathe by a nut 19, and a hand wheel 46 is provided to permit axial adjustment of the spindle to engage the surface of the brake disc with the abrasive disc. Boots 108, 109, 110 protect parts of the machine from dirt and chips.
