Abstract

1,156,112. Purifying exhaust gases; compressors; reciprocating pumps. FORD MOTOR CO. Jan.3, 1967 [Jan.24, 1966(2)], No.204/67. Headings F1A, F1B and F1N. An I.C. engine comprises a valve operated by a reciprocatory valve operating member, a diaphragm 34, Fig. 2 located to form a chamber inside a valve cover and arranged so that reciprocatory movement of the valve operating member causes movement of the diaphragm to vary the chamber volume thereby inducing fluid-flow into and out of the chamber. The reciprocating motion of rocker arm ends 22a, 22b Fig.2, flexes diaphragms 34a, 34b so that air drawn in via the respective one way check valves 46, 48 passes via flap valves 42, 44 into reservoir 40. A charge of air from chamber 36 passes via passage 54 to exhaust passage 20 to oxidize the unburnt hydrocarbons present at the beginning of the exhaust phase and similarly a charge from chamber 38 passes into passage 20 towards the end of the exhaust phase. In a modification a diaphragm (34<SP>1</SP>, Fig.3, not shown) co-operates with cover (32) to form an additional pump chamber adjacent intake valve rocker arm (60). In another embodiment a rocker arm-mounted stud (138, Fig.4, not shown) activates a flexible diaphragm (134) bonded to the rocker cover (132). The charge of air passes from the chamber (136) to the exhaust passage (120) through a one-way valve (140), mounted in the cover (132), and external tubing (142). In a modification of this embodiment applied to a multi-cylinder engine air is transmitted from the pump chamber of one cylinder to the exhaust passage of another cylinder, the diaphragms also being activated from the inlet valves. In another embodiment the diaphragm 134, Fig.7 (not shown) is snapped into an opening in cover 132 to form an integral pump chamber 136 having an inlet disc valve 166 and outlet ballvalve 148. The pump may be used for pumping an engine lubricant.
