Abstract

1,155,567. Treatment of pigments. LAPORTE TITANIUM Ltd. 18 July, 1966 [22 July, 1965[, No. 31251/66. Headings C1A and C1N. [Also in Division C4] A pigment is treated by contacting particles thereof with a macromolecular material containing organophilic and hydrophylic units having the formulµ respectively, in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> represent hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, substituted alkyl or substituted aryl, X represents -OR<SP>3</SP> -CO 2 R<SP>3</SP>, -R<SP>3</SP> or -O 2 CR<SP>3</SP> (where R<SP>3</SP> represents alkyl, aryl, substituted alkyl or substituted aryl), and Y represents -OH, -CO 2 H, -CONH 2 , -CN, -CO 2 CH 2 CH 2 OH, -HSO 3 or -COONHR<SP>1</SP> -R<SP>11</SP>R<SP>111</SP> (where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> represent alkyl or hydroxyalkyl groups, at least one of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> being a hydroxyalkyl group). The pigment to be treated may be titanium dioxide (optionally having small quantities of hydrated metal oxides, e.g. hydrated alumina or a hydrated oxide of titanium, on the surface thereof), a composite or coloured pigment containing titanium dioxide, silica, blanc fixe, lithopone, barium carbonate, zirconia, zinc oxide, aluminium oxide, chrome yellow or phthalocyanine. The macromolecular material is preferably a synthetic polymer and may be a homopolymer or a graft or block copolymer, and preferably contains units from an acrylic ester and acrylic acid. The numerical ratio of organophilic units to hydrophilic units may be in the range 1:4 to 4: 1. A macromolecular material wherein the group Y is -CO 2 H may be treated with a hydroxyalkylamine (e.g. triethanolamine) prior to use. The pigment particles may be dry before treatment or may be in the form of a paste, pulp or slurry with water. The macromolecular material is preferably applied in the form of a solution thereof in an alcohol (e.g. isopropanol) and/or water. The treatment, which involves thorough mixing, may take 5-30 minutes, and the particles are subsequently dried to remove water and solvent. The quantity of polymer used may be 0À01-5À0 wt. per cent (based on the pigment), and at least part of this is retained on the pigment particles.
