Abstract

1,155,260. Controlling tape reel motors. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 2 June, 1967 [6 June, 1966], No. 25612/67. Heading G5R. [Also in Division H2] A web, e.g. magnetic tape, is driven at not more than a first speed on to a take-up reel 6 by a motor 8 and rewound by a motor 12 at a greater speed, an indicator at the beginning of the web operating a detector on rewind to connect a circuit to the motors 8, 12 to apply an exponentially decaying braking current to halt the web. Forward drive by take-up motor 8 is effected with switch 14 in the position shown so that A.C. source 18 energizes motor 8 via contact 16, and D.C. source 25 is connected to motor 12 via contact 17 to provide back-tension. Both motors are induction type. Rewind-motor 12 is energized by source 18 via contacts 17, 32 and a warning lamp 65 is energized via contact 15. When a transparent section 46 at the end of the tape 2 passes a lamp 40 (which may be the warning lamp 65) the resistance of a photoresistor 36 falls so that transistor 38 conducts and relay contacts 32, 33 move up whereby the voltage stored in capacitors 50, 51 is switched to brake both motors, the braking torque decayng exponentially to a steady state value (Fig. 4, not shown).
