Abstract

A support for the analysing crystal of an X-ray spectrometer in which the crystal 1 firmly held e.g. by cement 2 in a first mounting 3 is adjustably inserted into a second mounting 4 in such a way that those of its faces which reflect X-rays occupy a specific position relative to the base 8 of the second mounting, the base of the second mounting being adapted to fit on a supporting surface in the spectrometer occupying a predetermined position relative to the specimen and the detectors of the spectrometer. Preferably, the crystal is held in a specific position in the second mounting by means of adjusting screws 5 and counter springs 6, the crystal being bonded into the first mounting in a manner known per se. Preferably the base member of the second mounting and/or the supporting surface in the spectrometer is/are provided with magnets whilst the other surface is a magnetically active material. The magnets may project from the plane of the supporting surface, or the base member, and may be held there by adjusting screws. The crystal holder may be assembled into a crystal changer which comprises several supporting surfaces in a drum-like structural assembly, a rotary drive being associated with the drum so mounted so as to rotate about its cylindrical axis. Where the detectors of the spectrometer are pivotable about an axis, this axis is approximately perpendicular to the drum axis. Lateral stops and abutments for positioning the base member of the second mounting are preferably associated with the supporting surfaces. Cams may be provided on the drum to actuate contacts which operate a circuit usable to monitor the rotation position of the drum. A particular embodiment of a drum crystal changer carrying four crystal plates is described in the Specification in relation to Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
