Abstract
1,154,729. Shrinkproofing keratinous fibres. I.W.S. NOMINEE CO. Ltd. 19 Sept., 1966 [23 Sept., 1965], No. 40650/65. Heading D1P. Keratinous fibres, e.g. fibres taken from the skins of sheep, goats, llamas, vicunas and alpacas, alone or in admixture with polyester, polyamide or polyacrylonitrile fibres, are shrink-proofed by treating them with ozone and a polymer. The fibres which may be in the form of loose fibres, slivers, tow or fabrics may be treated with the ozone at 20‹-100‹C in the presence or absence of moisture but preferably while they contain 5-40% by weight of water for 0.5-5 minutes. The ozone is preferably applied in the form of a gaseous mixture which is preferably a mixture of ozone and steam when application is at an elevated temperature. Treatment with the polymer may be effected either by polymerising a polymerisable substance in the presence of the treated fibres or by impregnating the treted fibres with an aqueous solution or dispersion of the polymer. Suitable polymers are polyethyleneimine condensation products of polyamides and epichlorhydrin, polyolefins and polyacrylates. 0.5-10% by weight of polymer may be applied and curing may subsequently be effected in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. ammonium chloride, oxalic acid, magnesium chloride, sulphuric acid or zinc nitrate, after impregnation and drying, in a drying machine, in a semi-decater or by passage through metal rollers heated to 150‹-400‹C. The fibres may be used in the manufacture of upholstery and carpets.
