Abstract

1,154,001. Image intensifier tubes. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 21 Aug., 1967 [13 Sept., 1966], No. 40965/66. Heading H1D A tube for intensifying coloured images and comprising closely spaced parallel cathode and screen surfaces, is characterized in that each surface comprises a plurality of small transparent areas of more than one colour distributed uniformly over the surface, corresponding areas of the same colour on the two surfaces being in register with one another. In one example two fibre optic plates 1 and 2 are formed of three differently coloured glasses, e.g. the normal additive colours red, green and blue or the three subtractive colours, with fibres 7 and 8 of the same colour in register. A photocathode surface 9 which has a spectral characteristic corresponding to the human eye is formed on one plate, and a phosphor 10 giving white light is formed on the other plate. The fibres may each have a core 25 microns in diameter with a cladding of about 5 microns third of colourless glass, of black glass, or of glass of the colour complementary to that of the core. If the plates are vacuum tight they may form the walls of the tube. In an alternative embodiment the cathode and phosphor plates are ordinary glass sheets coated with coloured patterns.
