Abstract

1,153,847. Navigation. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. Feb. 15, 1968 [March 27, 1967], No.7561/68. Heading G1F. A navigational computing system comprises an electrical circuit connected to a timer to indicate a remaining time enroute for a vehicle on a course between the momentary position of the vehicle and a first destination point, a further electrical circuit connected to an input for entering new vehicle course data corresponding to a substituted second destination point, the arrangement being such that the new data for the second destination point is directly substituted for the data for the first destination point when the remaining time enroute is greater than a first value e.g. five minutes, otherwise the new data is stored until the remaining time enroute reaches a second valve e.g. one minute whereupon the new data is entered and the first destination point is utilized a new starting point. Thus, if an aircraft is flying on a course to a first airfield and is diverted to a second airfield the computing system will compute the course to the second airfield unless the aircraft is only five minutes away from the first airfield whereupon it will store the second airfield data until the aircraft is within one minute from the first airfield when this will be used as a new starting point for the course to be flown to the second airfield. The system is also intended to be used for aircraft flights which consist of a series of great circle courses dividing the flight into sections so that data for the next section can be entered near the end of each section. Warnings to the operator are given if new destination data have not been entered within five and one minutes flying time from the destination previously entered.
