Abstract
1,153,746. Chlorotoluenes. TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc. 2 Sept., 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 39438/66. Heading C2C. Chlorotoluenes having an increased paraisomer content are obtained by chlorinating toluene with chlorine in the presence of a ring- chlorination catalyst and an organic sulphur compound which contains a divalent sulphur atom and which is at least partly soluble in the reaction mixture. Suitable sulphur-containing compounds include thiophene, benzthiophene, 2,5 - dimethyl thiophene, 2,5 - diphenylthiophene, tetramethyl sulphide, trithiane, phenylmercaptan, thiocresols, decyl -, hexadecyl- and octadecyl-mercaptans, dimethyl sulphide, thiobenzoic acid, thioglycollic acid, dithiosalycylic acid, sodium dithiosalycylate, nickel and ammonium thiobenzoate, dimethyl ammonium thiobenzoate, butyl thiosalycylate, ethylene trithiobenzoate, and sodium trithiocarbonate. Suitable ring-chlorination catalysts are iron, ferric, antimony, aluminium, zinc, zirconium, molybdenum and tin chlorides, iodine, and boron trifluoride.
