Abstract

1,153,527. Aromatic polymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 March, 1968 [23 March, 1967], No. 13891/67. Addition to 1,153,035. Heading C3R. Aromatic polymers are obtained by copolymerizing an alkali metal salt or onium salt of a 4-(4-halogenobenzoyl) phenol with an alkali metal salt or onium salt of a 2-(4-halogenobenzoyl) phenol or an alkali metal salt or onium salt of a 4-(4-halogenophenylsulphonyl) phenol, by the displacement of alkali metal halide or onium halide. The polymerization is carried out by heating the monomers in a solvent, or by heating in the absence of a solvent when the ortho monomers may be partially isomerized to the para configuration so that a copolymer may be obtained from a single monomer. In examples, copolymers are obtained by heating in solvents the potassium salt of 4-(4.chlorophenylsulphonyl) phenol with the potassium salt of 4-(4-chlorobenzoyl) phenol, and the potassium salt of 4-(4-chlorobenzoyl) phenol with the potassium salt of 2-(4-chlorobenzoyl) phenol, and by heating without a solvent the potassium salt of 2-(4-chlorobenzoyl) phenol.
