Abstract

1,153,107. Urea. TOYO KOATSU INDUSTRIES Inc. 14 Sept., 1967 [16 Sept., 1966], No. 42015/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C7] A process for the production of urea comprises a urea-synthesis step of reacting ammonia and carbon dioxide at urea-forming temperatures and pressures, treating the resulting ureasynthesis effluent in such a manner that the unreacted ammonium carbamate contained in said effluent is distilled off as a gaseous mixture of ammonia and carbon dioxide to obtain urea, wherein there is used for performing the process an apparatus which is so constructed that one or more surfaces thereof coming into contact with ammonium carbamate is or are of an alloy steel resistant to corrosion by ammonium carbamate, the said alloy steel containing at least 20% by weight of chromium, 1 to 7% by weight of nickel and 1 to 4% by weight of molybdenum, the balance being iron and unavoidable impurity. The said alloy may also contain manganese, silicon, tungsten, phosphorus, sulphur or nitrogen, and the urea-synthesis step is preferably conducted in the presence of less than 0À2% by volume of oxygen based on the amount of carbon dioxide used for the synthesis. At least a part of the said gaseous mixture is preferably absorbed in an absorbent and recirculated as an aqueous carbamate solution to the urea-synthesis step.
