Abstract

1,153,000. Riveting. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 16 Dec., 1966 [18 Dec., 1965], No. 56349/66. Heading B3U. [Also in Division B5] A first body 1 having a coating of or consisting at least in part of thermoplastic material 4 is secured to a second body 2 by providing a hole 3 through a portion of the body 2 which portion overlies the thermoplastic material 4 and passing a heated rod 5 through the hole 3 and pressing it into the thermoplastic material 4 to force some of this material, indicated at 8, into the hole 3 back over the rod 5 to form a locking engagement with the body 2 after the thermoplastic material has hardened after the removal of the rod 5. As shown, an electrical component 1 coated with a thermoplastic material 4 is secured to two flanges 2a, 2b of a support 2. Each rod 5 must be of smaller diameter than the respective hole 3. The depth of penetration of the rod 5 is regulated so that the recess 6 formed in the coating 4 is not too deep. A collar (not shown) may be fitted around the rod 5 so that the thermoplastic material is forced out of the hole, on removal of the rod 5, to form a rivet (9) Fig. 2, (not shown), against the outer face of the support 2. Additionally, or alternatively, the hole 3 is formed with a grooved wall. The rod 5 may have a conical end or may be hollow. If two bodies are secured together at more than one place the operation at each hole may be performed separately or automatic machinery may perform the operations at several holes simultaneously. If the two bodies to be secured together are not in contact at the place where they are to be joined, a collar may be inserted therebetween so that the thermoplastic material displaced by the heated rod is forced through the collar into the hollow.
