Hexamethyl - bicyclo - [2,2,0] - hexadiene- 2,5 is prepared by trimerizing butyne-2 at 0-50‹C in the presence of an inert solvent and anhydrous aluminium bromide, an alkyl aluminium dichloride, or an alkyl aluminium dibromide. Hexamethyl benzene is also produced in varying quantities by re-arrangement of the bicyclic compound.
