1,151,789. Endless conveyers; bottle &c. wrapping - machines. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. 21 Nov., 1966 [23 Nov., 1965], No. 52069/66. Headings B8A and B8C. Apparatus for grouping containers into package units, each such unit being a group of containers held in a wrap-round carton and separated by longitudinal and transverse partitions, comprises a conveyer 2 feeding the containers in rows on to a first rigid plate 3, with a divider bar B to space the rows, where drive lugs 19 on a pair of selector chains 9, 10 moving at the same speed as conveyer 2 select the number of containers constituting a package unit. The containers pass to a pair of intermediate spacer chains 109, 110 driven at a higher speed than the selector chains 9, 10 and with drive lugs 119 spaced apart a greater distance than the breadth of a container so that the containers of a group are sufficiently spaced to enable a partition P to be inserted. The partitioned group of containers passes to a pair of speed-up chains 23, 24 driven at a higher speed than the intermediate spacer chains 109, 110 and provided with drive lugs 30 arranged to engage a group of containers from behind. The spaces between the individual containers are thus removed and replaced by spacing between successive groups of containers. The drive lugs 30 propel the spaced groups of containers across a gap 5 on to a rigid plate 4 where conveyance is taken over by flight bars 40 driven at the same speed as the speed-up chains 23, 24 and arranged to maintain the spacing between the groups of containers.
