Abstract

1,151,721. Seismic signal processing. MOBIL OIL CORP. 17 May, 1966, No. 21801/66. Heading H4D. A time-domain filter operator, for filtering seismic data and having an impulse response which is varied with time, is defined by assigning values of amplitude and polarity to each of a series of sampling intervals and either (a) varying the values while maintaining the sampling interval constant or (b) increasing equally each of the sampling intervals. As described, the operator is convolved with a seismic trace to enhance the primary signal-to-noise ratio, and allows for the frequency-selective filtering of the seismic signal by the earth. The earth can be considered to have an impulse response which varies as the seismic signal propagation time increases and requires a filter operator with an impulse response which broadens with time as shown by lines 13, 13a, 13b in Fig. 3A, 4A, 5A. In the Fig. 6 embodiment the time-domain filter comprises rotating magnetizable band 23 and, a head 22 for recording the seismic trace on the band, and a series (only four are shown) of replay heads 30-33 whose spacing defines the operator sampling intervals. Switches 34-37 and variable-gain amplifiers 38-41 determine the assigned amplitude and polarity values of the filter, and the amplifier outputs pass via summing circuit 50 to recorder 51 and a monitoring oscilloscope. A programmer 52 and mechanical linkage 55-57a are used to increase continuously the spacing between the replay heads and thus increase the sampling intervals with time, as indicated in Figs. 3A, 4A, 5A. Amplifiers 72-75, gain-controlled by programmer 52, compensate for increasing attenuation of seismic signals with propagation time. Instead of varying the sampling intervals, the assigned values of amplitude and polarity for fixed intervals may be varied with time (as indicated in Fig. 9) by a programming system (52a) (Fig. 8) including function generators (130-133) which control the multiplication factors of multipliers (100-103).
