Abstract

115,157. Fairweather, W., (Singer Manufacturing Co.). July 26, 1917. Sewing - machines; cords, braids, and the like, attaching; workguides. - Relates to sewing - machines adapted to secure staystrips, e.g. at the junction between the bib and body portions of an overall, and consists in the means provided for moving the edges of the stay-strip away from the stitching-devices near the end of the operation in order to allow the operator to turn under the end of the strip and finish the attachment by hand sewing without having to unpick the stitching. In one form, the throat plate 3, Fig. 6, is cut away in front of the needle-holes 2, to provide a recess 4 bounded by an end vertical wall 7, and two convergent side walls 5, 6 joining two walls 9, 10 parallel to the line of feed. The walls 5 and 6 are chamfered at 5<1>, 6<1>. The stay-strip is led through a guide 12, Fig. 2, having folding edges 14 and a spring tongue 15 which terminate in front of the flat tubular delivery end 16 which is bevelled to fit between the surfaces 5, 6. The guide is adjustably secured to a plate 20 which is secured to a rock-shaft adapted to be actuated by a spring- controlled pivoted lever 32 having, at its upper end, a cam-slot engaging a roller on an arm 29 carried by the rock-shaft. A hemmer for the edge of the bib portion is hinged to a removable section of the cloth plate which also carries an edge guide for the body portions of the garment. Normally, the guide 14 delivers the strip on a level with the throat plate and the strip is then secured by the needles as shown in Fig. 4. Towards the end of the process, the lever 32 is shifted to depress the guide between the surfaces 5, 6 and cause the strip to miss the needles as shown in Fig. 2. For some purposes it may be necessary to move only one edge of the strip. In this case, one of the converging surfaces 5, 6 is omitted. In a modification, the crimping of the strip is obtained by fingers 112, Fig. 10, on the guide co-acting with recesses 114, Fig. 9, on the throat-plate. In a further modification, the tubular portion of the guide is provided with an aperture through which a rod 212, Fig. 13, is adapted to be passed when it is desired to withdraw the edges of the strip out of range of the needles.
