Abstract

1,151,530. Liquid level indication. ROSEMOUNT ENG. CO. Ltd. 1 Nov., 1967 [22 Dec., 1966], No. 57506/66. Heading G4H. A fluid level indicating device comprises a plurality of discrete level sensing devices each adapted to provide one of two output signals according to whether the fluid level is above or below the device, there being further means between each two devices giving an output analogue signal varying directly with the fluid level between the two devices. The sensing devices are capacitive and formed by rings assembled in a pack surrounding a central conducting cylinder as described in Specifications 1,110,175 and 1,149,500. The central member 100 is energized by an oscillator 101 which is controlled by the signal from the bottom electrode 11 so as to keep the capacitative current at a predetermined level. The current from electrode 11 also passes via diodes 53, 54 to resistor 51 shunted by capacitor 55. Above the electrode 11 are a group of electrodes 12-19 connected in parallel via diode 54 to the resistor 51 which develops a direct voltage proportional to the height of the fluid above the bottom of electrode 11. The group of electrodes 21-29 are also connected to resistor via diode 56 which is reversed with respect to diode 54 so that the current from this group is subtracted. As the level rises in this group the output voltage therefore falls The next higher group 31-39 is connected in the positive sense and the highest group 41-48 in the negative sense so that the voltage rises and falls as the fluid level rises as shown in Fig. 1B. The electrodes 20, 30, 40 are connected to subtraction circuits 60, 61, as described in Specification 1,149,500, to obtain outputs when the level is between the two pairs 20, 30 and 30, 40. These electrodes may be replaced by float switches. The analogue signal across resistor 51 may be applied to a meter through reversing switches which cause it always to read in the correct sense returning to zero at the beginning of each group. Alternatively, the signal may be digitized. In another modification, the electrodes 20, 30, 40 are grouped to provide an analogue signal which is digitized to obtain the signal indicating the level range. Such an analogue signal could be derived from a vertically disposed wire, the resistance of which is responsive to the cooling effect of the fluid.
