Abstract

1,151,270. Transmission systems; pulse modulation systems. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 21 Oct., 1966 [14 Jan., 1966], No. 47115/66. Addition to 1,039,822. Headings H4L and H4R. A receiver for use with the transmitter of Specification 1,039,822, in which a speech signal is added to a constant level high frequency signal and the resultant signal limited to obtain a rectangular waveform of constant amplitude having a constant total power level but a power-frequency distribution the same as that of the sum signal, separates the received signal into the speech frequency components and reference frequency components by filters 72 and 74, amplifies the reference frequency components in amplifier 76, adds the resulting signal to the speech frequency components in adder 78 and then limits the sum signal in limiter 80, from the output of which the speech signal components are separated by filter 82. The arrangement, by amplifying the reference signal variations relative to those of the speech signal and then limiting in a similar manner to that used at the transmitter, tends to vary the power level of the speech signal inversely relative the level of the received reference signal and so tends to restore the speech spectrum to its original power level, the accuracy with which it does so depending on the gain of the amplifier 76 which should be as high as is practicable.
