Abstract
1,151,239. Drying and curing coated wire; wire heating furnaces. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 5 Sept., 1966 [20 Oct., 1965], No. 39568/66. Headings F4B and F4G. An apparatus for coating wires comprises an oven 11 and a cooler 51 above the oven 11 through which the wires coated by means 14 are upwardly passed. The oven 11 comprises a zone in which the wires are heated by radiant heaters 15, 16 and an upward flow of heated air to remove solvent from the coating on the wires and a zone in which the coatings on the wires are cured by a downward flow of heated air. In the solvent removal zone air from the atmosphere is heated by heater 17 and directed by fan 18. This air flow mixed with vaporized solvent is passed into the curing zone via an opening 19 the size of which is adjustable to vary the pressure of the air flow entering the curing zone. In the curing zone the airflow is directed by fan 24 and exhaust 25 over catalytic burner 26, 27 which ignites the airflow. Part of the ignited airflow is exhausted and the remainder is directed upwardly through passage 28 and through nozzle means 29 into curing slot 21 to pass downwardly therethrough. The nozzle means 29 comprises a plurality of chambers the inlet openings of which are adjustable in size by plates to vary the velocities and temperatures of the streams issuing from the nozzle means 29. Pressure means 41 co-operates with nozzle means 29 such that the air streams from nozzle means 29 produce a Venturi effect at the outlet end of the oven. The air entering the curing slot 21 from the atmosphere is heated by heaters 42, 43. In the cooler 51 the cooling airflow is directed by fan 54 through passages 55 and 56, grid 57 and opening 61 the size of which is adjustable by plate 58, into slot 53. Means 62 co-operate with grid 57 and adjustable plate 58 such that the stream issuing from opening 61 produces a Venturi effect at the inlet end of the cooler and thus cooling air is prevented from entering oven 11.
