Abstract

115,066. Thuman, F., (Evans, O. B.). April 20, 1917. Hydrocarbons, cracking.-Toluol is produced from gar-tar naphtha by heating it, admixed with steam or water gas or both, in a checker brick chamber to a temperature, e.g. 1500‹ F., sufficiently high for the formation of a hydrocarbon gas containing a high proportion of toluol and other aromatic hydrocarbons in the form of vapour. The apparatus used consists of a watergas plant which comprises a generator and a carburettor 2 and fixing-chamber 3 containing checkerbrick, and which is fitted with air-blast connexions 7 and steam connexions 10, 10<a>. During the " run, " naphtha is admitted by pipes 12 or 13, and the carburetted water gas thus produced is led through a wash-box 4 and a cooling- coil 5 for the separation of the toluol. The products of combustion obtained in the " blast " escape through a flue 9.
