1,150,507. Refrigerators. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 27 Feb., 1967 [2 March, 1966], No. 9203/67. Heading F4H In a system for cooling helium, a plurality of identical cold gas refrigerators are provided each having at least two expansion spaces, and a helium stream is cooled by heat exchange with all the expansion spaces, the stream contacting all the spaces at one temperature before passing on to spaces at a lower temperature. As illustrated two refrigerators A and B are provided each with two expansion spaces, and helium from a compressor 20 passes in heat exchange contact with the higher temperature spaces and then the lower temperature spaces prior to liquefaction at a valve 29 and return to the compressor 20. The compressor outgoing and return streams are in heat exchange contact in heat exchangers 22. Cold is withdrawn from the system via a heat exchanger 30a. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the compression pistons of the refrigerators are omitted and the compression spaces are each connected to a compressor through supply and return lines including reservoirs and valves. In a further modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), three cold gas refrigerators are provided, each with three expansion spaces.
